So it seems like ages ago that I promised some more info on Tarot and the chakras, and seeing as I have some of my very own root chakra issues coming up, this seems like as good a time as any to start exploring the chakras using Tarot. Ready for a fun Tarot journey through the major energy centers of the body?
The Root Chakra: Muladhara
Our root chakra is located at the base of the spine, including the first 3 vertebrae. In our physical body, it governs our colon, bladder, bones, teeth, and central nervous system. Physical conditions in the body relating to anxiety, constipation, impotence (in men), low back, dental, and eating disorders can arise from an imbalance in this chakra. (Remember: this isn’t meant to substitute for medical advice. You should always seek the opinion of a qualified medical practitioner for any physical illness in the body.)
On a more spiritual/mental/emotional level, our root chakra is where we house our sense of safety, and our sense of belonging in a “tribe”. We’re talking about the very basic needs of survival – food, water, and shelter. This is where we find our right to exist. When these things are withheld from us, even at a very early age, it sets up a pattern of blockages or excess energy in this root chakra. People with energy blocks in the root chakra sometimes have a difficult time providing for themselves or creating a welcoming home life.
Root Chakra Gemstones
The root chakra is associated with the color red, and the element of earth. Gemstones that are associated with the root chakra include stones like red jasper, garnet, hematite, black tourmaline (one of my favs!), bloodstone, and smoky quartz for absorption and transmutation of negative energy. Wearing or carrying these gemstones can help balance the energy of an excess or deficient root chakra.
Root Chakra Essential Oils
Those lovely, earthy essential oils are some of my favorites – the ones that bring to mind the scent of rich, damp earth. These are the oils that you use as base notes when making essential oil blends, or that can be used for soothing anxiety. Patchouli, sandalwood, cedarwood, and vetiver are some of my favorite oils for balancing root chakra energies.
Root Chakra Tarot
Hey! Guess what? We can also find root chakra associations within the Tarot! In the Tarot, our root chakra is associated with the suit of Pentacles, and with the major arcana cards of The Devil, The Emperor, and The Tower. These are the cards that are most concerned with our physical existence and include things like our jobs, finances, home life, and possessions. All the trappings our physical existence in this plane are included in the root chakra Tarot cards.
Root Chakra Tarot and Oracle Decks
There are a few Tarot and oracle decks that I associate with the root chakra. These are the earthy, richly illustrated decks that I use whenever I need to feel grounded, or when I’m feeling particularly grounded and safe.
- Animal Totem Tarot by Leeza Robertson and Eugene Smith
- Wildwood Tarot by Mark Ryan and John Matthews
- Harmonious Tarot (mini deck)
- Celtic Tarot (mini deck)
- Fifth Element Tarot
- Earth Magic Oracle Cards by Steven D. Farmer
- Medicine Cards by Jamie Sams and David Carson
- Gaia Oracle by Toni Carmine Salerno
I could go on at length about each of these decks and why I love them for root chakra work, but that’s another blog for another day.
Root Chakra Tarot Spread
You knew I was going to include one, right? Of course the Tarot can help us understand what’s going on in our root chakra, and can give me plenty of insight as to what needs work. You can use this spread, arranging the cards any way that feels right to you:
- Card 1: What is the general state of my root chakra?
- Card 2: What belief patterns did I inherit from my family?
- Card 3: What is my personal code of honor?
- Card 4: What unfinished business with my family needs healing?
- Card 5: What blessings come to me from my family?
- Card 6: How can I let go of any familiar beliefs that no longer serve me?
Try it out, let me know what pops up for you! I’ll share my own root chakra Tarot reading later on. Meanwhile, stay tuned – I’m working on an 8-week self-guided online course about Tarot and the chakras!
