It’s here! People, we have officially reached the mid-point of winter. On the calendar, anyway. We might still have a few more months of cold, damp, and bone-chilling weather ahead of us, but I’ve already noticed the days getting longer and the light shifting every so slightly back to that warm, blue summer hue.

Today is Imbolc, or Candlemass, the celebration of winter’s midpoint. Punxatawney Phil did indeed see his shadow, so we’re in for at least 6 more weeks of winter weather, but here in the Adirondacks, that’s a given.

In my internet meanderings, I came across this awesome Imbolc Tarot spread by Ethony, and thought it would be fun to take it for a spin! Check out what my cards had to say to me today as I celebrate reaching the half-way point between solstices.

Card 1: Seed – What Needs to Be Planted Now: 5 of Wands

The honey badger in this card is, as the book tells me, a total badass. These animals can be downright vicious, and are excellent at taking care of themselves. With all those wands pointing at her, the honey badger knows what she has to do – she has to step into her power as a total badass and take care of herself and her loved ones. Conflict is never fun, but sometimes unavoidable. We all have situations in our lives that we would rather not face (American politics, anyone?) but instead of shrinking away from them, over the course of the next few months until the summer solstice, let’s focus our energies on cultivating our inner badass warrior goddesses. (Sounds good to me.)

Card 2: Consecration – Where Are Our Blessings? King of Wands

More wands. Remember that wands are about our souls, our inner fire, the process that transforms us throughout our lifetimes and on our spiritual journeys. Yes, the King of Wands is here to tell us that our blessings are here in the form of our self-confidence. It’s like they say, do no harm, but take no shit. Tap into the energy of our soul’s desires and our soul’s Truth to guide us through these next few months of winter!

Card 3: How Can the Maiden Goddess Archetype Aid Us This Season? Justice

Oh, Justice. That card that asks us to remember that there are things in this universe that we can’t possibly understand, nor are we entitled to understand. The Maiden Goddess archetype is all about innocence and magic. Have you done something lately that makes you feel like a kid again? We need to go back and revisit those things from our childhood that made us feel like we were magic, but we also need to allow our sense of right and wrong to evolve and mature as we move through these very uncertain times. For the next few months of winter, step back in time and revisit what made you feel special as a child – do something that makes you feel good, whether it’s indulging in a meal of comfort food from childhood or reading your favorite bedtime story. Go back and remember the joy of being a child, and think about how you can use those things to follow your dreams now in this phase of your life.

Card 4: Plough – What Do I Need to Prepare? 4 of Wands

Boundaries. Stability. The 4 of Wands here, with the little Bowerbird in front of his creation, is telling us that we need to up our game when it comes to being prepared. We need to get our ducks in a row, call the squirrels back from the rave, and focus our creative expression towards our goals. We need to pay attention to detail when we’re working on creating things that come from the deepest places in our souls. So use these next few months of winter to get organized – make lists, don’t skimp on the details, and be clear about what it is you’re trying to create and attract into the world. It will be well worth it in the end, I promise you!

Card 5: Renewal – What Is Coming Back to Us? The Hierophant

I love this card. The polar bear, majestic and secure in the knowledge of herself and her place in the world, possesses the Keys To the Kingdom in this card. What she is being called to do might not make sense to others, but she knows that she is carrying on the legacy of her ancestors. She knows that she has been entrusted to safeguard the wisdom of those that have come before her, and she understands how to apply that knowledge and wisdom to the challenges that we face today. I have certainly noticed more messages coming in from all places around me lately – are you awake and aware to communications from Spirit? If not, this is the perfect time to spend some time in meditation and contemplation to enhance your perception of the world around you.

Card 6: What Signs Should You Be Looking For To Take On a New Project or Decision? King of Pentacles

This card has been coming up quite a bit in readings, both for myself and for other people, and the message is always the same: look inside for the resources you need to create a new world on the outside. What kinds of inner resources do you  have? Are you organized? Spontaneous? Flexible? Are you willing to take an honest account of your strengths and use those strengths moving forward? Stay aware of opportunities that may arise that play to the things you’re good at. Look for messages that coincide with your goals and dreams. So as we move through this second half of winter, look to messages that come from the physical world around you to guide you into spring!

Thanks to Ethony for creating this insightful spread to help guide us through the last dark months of winter. Spring is right around the corner!
